South Gate and Gatekeeper

The ancient city of Baoding, located in Jifu, is known as the "South Gate of Beijing".

According to legend, after the Ming Dynasty moved its capital to Beijing, Emperor Zhu Di attached great importance to the Zhili Province where the capital was located, and established the Governor General's Office in Baoding, an important town in southern Beijing. He also appointed Baoding as the "South Gate of Beijing". The gatekeeper is the 'Gate Dou', who once served as a public servant in the ancient lotus pond. All civil and military candidates from all over the country, whether they are from Beijing, must go to Baoding, the south gate of Beijing, register at Mendou, and bring the stamped license to enter Beijing for the exam. From this, Baoding, a strategic location that military strategists have always strived for in history, and this long-standing cultural ancient city, has been called the South Gate of Beijing. In the city of Baoding, there are also the "North Division" in charge of gold, silver, and materials, the "South Division" in charge of justice, and the Daqing River and Road Administration in charge of transportation. For gold, silver, and materials entering Beijing from various regions, as well as important legal cases, there must be Baoding official documents. There are so many Yamen and bureaucrats in Baoding, no wonder that Qingyuan Tang Supervisor of the County County has been discriminated as a "seven grade sesame official".

Legend has it that during the Guangxu period, the city of Baoding continued to follow the system established by the Ming Dynasty. Liu Luohuai once worked as a doorman in Dajidian Village, west of Baoding City. During his tenure, he wrote a "alms giving" proclamation, whether he was present or not, under the name of "doing good for the south gate of Beijing", to give alms to the civil and military officials who passed through here, which was actually asking for money. When he was about to resign and be transferred, unfortunately, both eyes had sarcomas, causing unbearable pain and inability to see. He had to go home for treatment. Seeing the situation of blindness, I suddenly heard someone shouting loudly outside the door, knocking on the door to beg for food. After opening the door, I saw a white haired Taoist and rushed into the hospital to see the owner of the house. Liu Luohuai also went to the doctor randomly due to illness. Thinking that the poor monk might be able to cure his illness, he asked to enter the room. The old Taoist looked at Liu Luohuai's eyes and said, "Wuliang Buddha, your eye disease is very serious. You need to take my miraculous elixir to improve, and you need to accumulate virtue and do good deeds to ensure recovery." After saying this, he took out a small package of pills he had with him and handed them to Luo Huai, saying, "One pill every three days, half a month. Accumulate virtue and do good deeds, and remember to do so." Luo Huai hurriedly asked his family to take out gold, silver, and food rewards, but the old Taoist shook his head and waved his hand, refusing to take them, Drifting away again, never turning back.

Half a month later, Luo Huai's eye disease really improved and he knew the true language of human spirits. In order to ensure recovery and benefit the people, he took out all the money he had donated during his term of office and built a theater in his own village, at the Dajidian in the Banduo Station, which runs through the nine provinces. A Bodhisattva Temple was built across the theater, and two bridges were built on the Xiaoqing River. Finally, he bought eight acres of land with the remaining money and handed it over to the village for public use. So far, Liu Luohuai's belongings are still in the legendary village of Nanmen Gate.
